This dehumidifier kept ALL unwanted moisture out of my home. I am very lucky I chose such a great brand that is not only quite, but works wonderfully at removing mositure from my older home.

I purchased the Delonghi Model DE500P 50 pint dehumidifier with pump at my local Home Depot back on 3-Aug-05 for $299.00. My main reason for purchasing the unit with a pump was for unattended dehumidification of my cellar (basically I didn't want to have to empty the bucket all the time).

I noticed two things right away:

1.) The unit says it will "shut down" after reaching the desired humidity level. That's only partially true. The compressor side of the dehumidifier does shut down, but the fan continues to run. I questioned the sales rep on the phone about this, and she confirmed that this was how it was designed. I would have hoped that since this dehumidifier carries the "Energy Star" label the unit would completely shut down, but it doesn't.

2.) While the unit does have a programmable "delayed on" and a "delayed off" feature, it doesn't have a programmable # of hours on / off cycle feature.

Lastly, the pump started making a loud racket after about 80 days when the pump would cycle on. I called Delonghi and the closest authorized repair centers that handled dehumidifiers were in Connecticut (I live in Massachusetts). You pay the shipping to the repair center, and Delonghi pays for parts and labor under warranty as well as the return shipping. The lady from Delonghi figured it would be roughly 4-8 weeks to get the unit fixed and shipped back to me, depending on if the repair center had the parts.

Luckily for me, Home Depot has a 90 day return policy. I intend to return the unit, and see who else manufactures one with a little more functionality, energy saving features, and with a pump that lasts.
