When I finally decided to make the switch from film to digital, I did a lot of research to find the camera that best fit my budget and my needs. Choosing the EOS 30D was an excellent decision. The camera is similar in size to my EOS film cameras (EOS 1N, EOS 5), and has the familiar quick control dial wheel on the back of the camera to ease exposure compensation and manual control. The camera feels very solid and sturdy in the hand, but might be a bit heavy or bulky for those with small hands. The pixel count is a little low by current standards (8MP vs 10-12 for curent Canon models such as the 40D or the new Rebel XSi), but plenty for my needs, as I rarely print anything larger than 11x17. It has handled everything I've thrown at it, from landscapes to portraits to close-ups of flowers and ancient coins. All in all, the 30D is one of the best camera bargains available today.

QuickTake:

Pros: Fast, good burst, well-laid out controls, solid construction
Cons: Low MP count by current standards

Comments:

Review Verdict: An excellent midrange digital SLR, the 30D has given way to its even more excellent successor, the 40D. However, it remains a great choice if you can find it at a good price.

EOS 30D

The EOS 30D is Canon's latest mid-range SLR digital camera. It builds on the strengths of the semi-pro EOS 20D, but features the same 8.2-megapixel CMOS sensor.

Review Verdict: The supplied EOS utility provides tethered image capture and makes an extensive range of features available from the Mac or PC

Comments:
The EOS 30D may not be much of an improvement over the 20D, but it's still a great camera.

Review Verdict: A bit of a disappointment for anyone hoping for a major upgrade, the EOS 30D is unlikely to attract anyone who already owns a 20D. However newcomers to the mid-level DSLR market will find a superbly specified camera with the usual Canon hallmarks of relia
