Product Rating: 4.00 star(s) Best bet in the price range.

Comments:
It probably won't become a professional camera but DX7590 seemed the best choice within the price range for general public who wants additional features over those "flat" ones. I have sort thru many diff model mainly the picture quality in galleries on the net, and I am sure I made the right choice.

LCD screen is very large, crispy and bright, though not bright enough for the direct sunlight. Pics under the bright sunlight are excellent and just like the pics on the galleries that I went thru. Quality under darker situations and with flash are not the best. I am still researching how, since I am not an experienced photographer. If you will take pictures mostly under darker situations, a Sony probably will be a better bet as far as I know. There are plenty of manual controls including exposure, shutter speed, ISO etc. Manual focusing is missing like many DX6490 users agreed. Also, focusing is slow especially when highly zoomed. In some highly zoomed cases, it will never focus. Pressing the button halfway tells if it will within a second or two.

Pictures come in 1.8, 3.1, 4.0, 4.4 and 5.0 mega pixels. 256mb SD card will hold 74 of 5mb or 194 of 1.8mb pics (and you can guess number of other size pics). There are fine (never tried, but think it is bitmap mode) and compressed (jpeg) mode, and above numbers are at compressed mode. Software and docking station is not the best (in fact, I have never seen a good software from any other manufacturers) and now I transfer files directly via card reader. Seems software is designed for very computer illiturate people, who have trouble figuring out how to attach a file on e-mails or print.

The best part that I like is the "color tone" of the pics. Galleries showed some better pics with Fuji and Canon models, but they were 2-3 times more expensive.

Camera doesn't show battery power left until it's put on docking station.
During review, pressing the "info" button reveals how the pic was taken like f number, shutter speed, mode, flash, etc, and it is an excellent tool to learn to take good manual pics. However, I still do not know if the info gets transfered onto the computer. Seems files loose the info when they get transfered, and I manually wrote down info of the best pics.

Baseline, I strongly recommed this camera. I am pretty confident this is the best choice within the price range. Ah, don't forget to shop around for the older model DX6490 if you do not need 5mb pics. I was a little compulsive at the last minute.

QuickTake:

Pros: Style, 10x optical zoom, SD, lens size, some manual controls
Cons: slow focus, occasional shaky pics, no manual focus
