You have to want to study this camera, otherwise just go with something simpler. If you get to know it, you'll be rewarded. Too bad Nikon did make the next sequel to the 4500 (I've written them about it).
Battery and flash could be better. Many accessories for cheap. A bit bulky but the swivel design gives you unique advantages.
Enjoy it if you own it.

This camera is very sturdy, having dropped mine many times and let others use it in my company as an event photographer. This camera always works and takes great pics with just a little training in using the auto focus auto exposure. I am completly happy with this item and recommend it highly.
QuickTake:
Pros: Very sturdy. Used by event photographer. Easy use Brilliant

My first digital, which I've used for several years with pleasure. With backup batteries and a large memory card (extra purchases), I'm able to take literally hundreds of photos in a day (and then backup batteries overnight). Can be used easily on AUTO mode but also has features one can grow into including adjustable aperture and shutter speed. At first I thought the movie mode to be just a gimmick, but I've found it useful; e.g., street dancing in Granada, salmon trying to leap over a waterfall, etc. (It includes sound.)
Some features are not as easy to access as one might hope, but the manual outlines them all quite clearly.
QuickTake:
Pros: Features, including great macro for flowers, other closeups

I have a DSLR and sometimes you just want to travel ight. Yes there are trade-offs. First off, I didin't know how to set it down. The thin sides either have the viewfinder or lens. One of the broadsides has the LCD. Surely this rules out 3 of the for sides so be careful when you set 'er down. The on-board flash is weak as they are on all cameras. There is not hot shoe but then again the camera is so compact it would be awkward to attache a big ole flash to it anyway. Use it as a P&S. It is fine for that. But don't go hog wild on this one by buying the flash bracket etc.
QuickTake:
Pros: Compact, picture quality.l
Cons: lens, lcd, viewfinder vulnerable, flash sucks, no hotshoe

I have taken over 3,500 pictures since March 03, and this camera never fails to impress! Macro is awesome, lens is compatible with ALL Nikon lenses!!!! The swivle body allwos for unique shots and angles on photos other cameras cannot produce as easily. The TIFF and JPG format photos are beatuiflu and sharp, and can be printed with better than photo qualtiy at 300dpi on 5x7in paper! 4 mega pixel resolution is perfect for screen savers. Fits in my cargo pants pockets nicley! The pros go on and on... My only gripes are the small compact flash card that comes wiith it (16 MB) but most cameras have thsi flaw, sometimes highlights in extremely shiney objects can get blown out, and lag time between TIIF format shots.
QuickTake:
Pros: Beautiful color, and quality. 5x7 inch 300dpi prints, sharp
Cons: highlights can get a little blown, delay between TIFF shots

This is a good product from Nikon. I compared it to other products like Canon / Kodak etc. of the same MP range, and found that quality of the pictures is far better. Also the manual provided is quite detailed (though I found it slightly cumbersome to trun on to different pages for various instrucitons). This is a good camera for all of those who want to enter the digital photography world, and in style !!
Those who are used to handle pretty heavy SLR stuff might find this product too light, but one overcomes these facts pretty fast !! GO FOR IT !!!
QuickTake:
Pros: Good design, sturdy build, simple controls, good manual
Cons: Nothing in particular
Recommended: Yes
