I bought this camera for my son. It worked fine for a while and then one day the lens just wouldn't open and it wouldn't work any longer. I called to see if it could be something simple that could be fixed. I was told it could have some sand or something inside the lens and to bring it in (to a local camera shop) and they would try to "blow" it out. This is the 3rd Cybershot camera I have had that has just quit working for seemingly no reason. I continue to buy Sonys because I have all the accessories, but think I should move on to something else!!!
QuickTake:
Pros: Inexpensive, compact, takes nice pictures when it works
Cons: Seem to be "disposable" cameras in that they don't last long

This camera broke less than 1 hour after I opened the box. The screen went dark and never worked again. After paying to ship it to the Sony repair center they offered to replace it with a refurbished unit. I bought a new camera and feel they should have replaced it with a new camera. After voicing my dismay they offered to refund my purchase price. I'm out the $$$ I spent on accessories, taxes, and shipping, but will use my refund to by a Cannon Powershot SD 600.

I am very unhappy with this camera. The shutter is delayed and the photos are almost always blurry. Forget trying to take any action shots it is hard enough to get sharp photos of people posing. It has very limited controls so forget trying to do anythin
QuickTake:
Pros: Small and compact
Cons: very blurry

To be honest I was disappointed with the Sony DSC S500. I have become used to seeing very high quality from Sony digital cameras, but this camera is nothing out of the ordinary and I was surprised by the shutter lag times too....
