Comments:
The included basemap is so poor it brings the whole package down. The Basemap is compiled from information that is, at least, 15 years old. The few roads that appear on the map in my area, Seacoast, NH, are mostly mislabeled (Rt 51 instead of Rt. 101). There are only major highways included, Rt 1 is on map but Rt 1A is not. All water features show a single tone of blue. No islands included. Expect to spend another $100-$200 in additional software to make the unit useful; that is more useful than a $100 non-mapping model. I have never gotten the 18-30 hours of battery life stated on the packaging, the best I've seen is 10. The unit says it's waterproof; to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Get a dry bag for it if you plan to use it on the water another, $20-$30. Controls are cryptic and not intuitive. It does have a nice color screen that is easy to read.

QuickTake:

Pros: Color screen, good antenna
Cons: Basemap is less than useless. Battery life short.

Product Rating: 5.00 star(s) Garmin 60CSx - Good value

Comments:
I have been using the Garmin 60CSx for a while now. I use it mostly while hunting in the wilderness. The interface is quite intuitive and the keys are large enough to use with gloves on. The unit is rugged, water resistant, and has rubberized gripping surfaces that work well even when wet. Satellite acquisition is quite rapid, far better than my Magellan model. Dropping waypoints and backtracking are a snap. The display is large for a hand held, bright, and in color. I have mine loaded with topos of the entire state of New Mexico, and one map deep into Arizona, Colorado, and Texas. The battery life is great, as long as you don't keep the screen at full brightness constantly. I purchased mine for approximately $425 and feel it is well worth the money.

QuickTake:

Pros: Intuitive interface, bright screen, satellite acquisition
Cons: screen rather small for driving applications

Comments:
This is the only GPS you’ll ever need or want to have. I’ve been using it to Geocache with for two years now and it gets me right on target 100% of the time. Cloud cover, thick forest, and even inside most buildings this puppy works. Easy to use and the manual is very clear and to the point. Hooks up to the internet for easy download of co ordinances. Got lost in the woods one time and it got me out and I didn’t even have the back track feature on. All my Geocaching friends who have one, rave about it and the ones who don’t have one…..well, they wish they did! This unit has it all and does it all and more.

QuickTake:

Pros: Easy to use, powerful, accurate.
Cons: Can't think of any!

Product Rating: 5.00 star(s) Expensive but worth it

Comments:
I purchased this GPS last October with the original idea of using it for mapping the snowmobile trails in my area. I found this unit to be very good at giving me a accurate track to be uploaded to the Mapsource program. The Garmin maps are not as detailed as some after market but are a lot less expensive and contain more area coverage. I found the Topo map good for off road use with its trail markings and the lake detail was good for a program that covered the entire country. The City Navigator program is the one to buy if you want to navigate city streets. It is quite a bit more expensive than the Metroguide program but it contains much more detail and routing is more accurate. I also found that the biggest feature that I use is the magnetic compass. After I purchased the unit, a friend got me hooked on the sport of Geocaching. I have found that the magnetic compass is most valuable when using the unit for this activity. If I was to have to replace this GPS, I would insist on that feature for my next unit. If for whatever reason my GPS needed replacing in the near future, I would immediately purchase another GPSMap 60CSx. I have found this unit to be quite rugged though, after a few accidental drops on the concrete the only damage is that I lost a couple of nubs from the rubber casing. The battery life is quite good and appreciated as the accessories (external power supply) for the GPS are very expensive to buy. Also, having removable map memory is good as you can use the navigator program to get you to your location, then in seconds, have the topo maps for the trail.

This is a premium GPS with a premium price, its main fault is it could be a little less expensive with less expensive accessories.

QuickTake:

Pros: Excellent accuracy, Magnetic compass
Cons: Having to calibrate compass frequently
