TomTom ONE 3rd Edition Auto GPS

I purchased this to negotiate unfamiliar towns and cities in New Jersey and New York, which it does quite well.
<br>I also use it to make long distance trips across the US, but use independent hotel guides to find places to stay over. I've figured out how much it overestimates my ETA and can compensate for that.

<br>This unit also performs quite well in North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana and fairly well in Michigan until you get into the Northern Lakes regions where trails and roads are confused as they are in Pennsylvania.

<br>It does not do well in my own area of rural Pennsylvania at all. You have to totally ignore it or it will send you down a power line right-of-way instead of a road to get you in and out of here. Also, 50% of the local streets were listed as impassable trails and hiking trails are listed as roads. I have entered hours of corrections for this and it works decently now, but I still have to ignore it where I know it is wrong.

<br>In Tom-Tom's defense, MS Streets and Trips and other major map programs also have those same power line rights-of-way listed as streets, so, the Tom Tom can only be as accurate as the mapping company they use!

I have had this thing for 9 months now and the longer I have had it, the more mistakes it seems to make.
<br>It recently took me into an orange grove, showing a non-existent road, and seems to be out-of-sync with street numbers, and is getting worse as time goes by.
<br>I work in sales and frequently get asked to visit businesses in areas I am not familiar with and can no longer rely on this unit to get me there!
<br>I update the unit fairly frequently but it is steadily getting worse.
<br>The point of interest library it has is a joke, I live close to the border with Mexico and there are several international bridges here but according to my TomTom1 there is only one bridge/border crossing on the entire Tex/mex border.
<br>Also, it has a very poor selection of hotels, Zoos etc. Recently I was in Del RIo Texas and tried to use this unit to locate a famous Winery there but it said the nearest Winery was over 200 miles away! I had to ask locals for directions!
<br>I have heard a lot of reviewers complain about the estimated time of arrival it shows. I ahve always accepted that people drive at different speeds thus thought it unfair to expect a GPS to be accurate but after keeping track, it does seem to off by a lot, I have yet to find it come close to my arrival times even when I am only a mile away!
<br>I can no longer rely on this unit and will probably have to buy something else, keeping this as a back up.

Easy to use. If shortest way, will route correctly including gravel roads. Easy to program. Estimated time of arrival has been within a minute. Speed is acturate. Clear screen easy to read. Can find place by corridents as will as street address.

Wrote TomTom asking how to make the voice louder. Recieved a reply that I would get an answer within a few days. All I got was a survey. Answered the survey and asked the same question. Never got a response to either request. Cannot find a phone number for TomTom to get an answer to my question.

Works great right out of the box. Free downloads of map updates is a good thing. Easy to use web site. Able to reach technical support quickly and each time they have been very helpful. Easy to go from day to night viewing. Easy to input locations and save to favorites. Voice prompts are very good even without giving actual street names. I would recommend this unit to anyone who wants a very good basic GPS without all the bells and wissels that most people probably would not use anyway.

Have used this system for travel in U.S. and Canada.I've found the unit very reliable and have used it to get to places I would normally avoid.Has many points of interest in both U.S. and Canada!

I bought this GPS for my 85 year old father who still insists on driving. I found it at Walmart on 1/15/2008 for $148.00. This was my first experience with any GPS unit and I not only found it very easy to use, but to also teach my dad how to use. I downloaded the free map update before taking a trip and found it to be very accurate. My dad lives out in the country and this thing started assigning names to roads that I didn't realize even had names. It even tracked me walking out to the mailbox! Ijust loved it and am going to buy one for myself.

Sounds like a good deal, but do your homework. This model only announces turns, not street names. Must download updated maps and daily!!!GPS-FIXes. USA Points of interest is terribly outdated and hard to select using POI touch screen menu, sends me to the wrong location. No response from customer service. Make sure you can return it if you buy one.

tomtom one 3rd edition review: TomTom have fiddled at the edges in the upgrade from Slim Edition to 3rd Edition, but the competitive price makes the One a worthy player in the entry-level GPS market....
