My drive in my desktop began to make noise. Norton was finding errors. I bought a new drive and installed it as a slave and yes I saved my data but lost my operating system and drivers because the imaging software I had used initals NG is difficult to use and when I needed it I guess it's not the thing you practice so I spent several days getting back to normal. I guess I was lucky to get a warning but it made me aware of a problem.
In an effort to solve the problem I bought Smart Disk and Acronis Disk Image. Wow a child could use this combination. First the Acronis is windows native and will copy anything even if it is in use to the image drive. The Smart disk is fast and seamless becoming another drive in your system as soon as you plug it into a USB2. It can also be used on USB but it would be slow. Comes in fire wire for macks and if you do not have USB2 a pci board is available for a few bucks extra to give you the USB 2 ports. This was the first time I had lost a Hard drive. Unfortunately my new drive initals IBM failed after three weeks and I had the opportunity to test my new back up drive and software. Wow restored over 20 gig of files including operating system and drivers in 25 minutes. We now back up all three computers on this network to the drive. It is done daily in the background and SmartDrive goes home with me. I finally feel secure.. This combination is low cost and easy to use.
QuickTake:
Pros: Easy install, flawless and fast operation, low cost per gig.
