Review Verdict:
The unremarkable sound quality of the Philips HTS6500 is outweighed by its winning combination of slick aesthetics, impressive features, and affordable pricing.

QuickTake:
Pros: The Philips HTS6500 is a high-style virtual-surround home-theater system that offers upscaling DVD playback via its HDMI output. In addition to DVDs and CDs, it plays a wide variety of file formats including DivX; MPEG-1, -2, and -4; MP3; WMA; and JPEG fi
Cons: The HTS6500's passive subwoofer lacks precision and punch, and you can't independently control the subwoofer's volume. Sound customization options are very limited. The virtual-surround effect doesn't match the surround-sound capabilities of a true 5.1-ch
This is a HTIB, A 'home theater in a box'. Everything is included except a $49 HDMI cable. Sleek, modern, and compact, this HTIB has tons of features! Most important are are DVD upscaling to 720P/1080i and a HDMI connection to your new HDTV. These (2) features are not always available even on $500-$1000 systems. DVD movies look and sound awesome! The system is up todate with Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS surround decoding capabilities. It has a AM-FM tuner, USB connection for JPEG pictures and reads CD's, USB, MP3's and more. The Multi Channel and Dolby 2.1 sound and volume is very very good but not great. The remote has an annoying delay and the standard TV input volume could be a bit louder. (Even after the firmware upgrade). All in all for approx $300 it sounds very good, plays great and is easy to setup and use. If you have a limited budget, this Philips HTS-6500 is a must buy because it has the features you need and it sounds like a home theater should! By the way, I did hours of research and this is what I bought. I understand this is not for the home theater purist with lots of cash. CNET.com shows this Philips HTS-6500 as the 5th most popular HTIB but it is competeting with much more expensive systems. Pretty impressive!
