I've used a variety of remote control products and this is by far the most vexing product to date. Don't misunderstand me, it works, but it is not easy to deploy to the end user. When a product is not easy to setup, it makes the job of a Administrator or Help Desk technician that much harder, and in turn costs more money. Additionally it lacks both the ability to traverse firewalls, and the performance monitoring utilities commonly found in it's competitor's software.

I recently started using LogMeIn.com's Rescue software, which at the moment is a free download to try out. It is Fast, Secure, and extremely easy to deploy to the end user. If you need something a bit more you could try their IT Reach. If your not like me, and need it for the home I'd suggest trying out their consumer version which is completely free. Not trying to plug anything here, but just trying to make it clear that there are much better options out there. In short, pcAnywhere is not well suited for either the home consumer or the system administrator because of it's cumbersome deployment/setup, as well as lack of adequate utilities.

QuickTake:

Pros: Remote access utility supported by a big name: Syamantec
Cons: Slow to Deploy, Major Firewall Issues

Product Rating: 5.00 star(s) The Gold Standard for Computer Remote Control

Comments:
PcAnywhere has been around for a long time and was available to remote control and transfer files to and from DOS computers long before Windows was introduced. I have been using PcAnywhere since its inception. This version is the fastest and most sophisticated of them all and is required for Windows XP. The original PcAnywhere was mostly used with dial-up connections. Today I suspect most people use this program via a TCP/IP connection.

The usual setup is to have one computer standing by in the host mode and a remote computer set up to control it. The host computer can be controlled via connections through any COM or printer port, modem, infrared or network connection. The versatility of this program may be daunting for someone who is unfamiliar with Windows ports and networking protocol. However, once the program has been set up properly, it is straightforward and simple to use. Novice computer users may need help to properly configure everything.

PcAnywhere provides a fast, secure way to take control of a remote computer and transfer files to or from it. I have used my laptop computer to remote control a Windows NT server in New Jersey via the Internet from places all over the world. The files on the server at my office are available to me from anyplace that I can get an Internet connection. That's a tremendous convenience.

QuickTake:

Pros: Best for secure file transfer and remote control
Cons: Setup is more complex than most software
