Like most pre-packaged systems, it comes with a lot of extra stuff that needs to be cleaned off to make the system truly useful. However after all the settings are configured correctly, the system is pretty good.

QuickTake:

Pros: Pretty color, good features for the price
Cons: Too much junk software

I bought a Dell 1420 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo for general purpose computing (web surfing, spreadsheets/letters, occasional movies) and to take with me when needed. I'm generally very satisfied. The battery charges quickly and lasts for 4 hours. The processing speed is more than adequate for my purposes. Working with several programs open at once doesn't slow down my laptop much. The built-in bluetooth card gives me a lot of freedom without wires. I love the Media Direct capability which bypasses a normal start up. Instead, you can quickly access photos, movies, and music with a single button. The computer isn't without faults. First, I was hoping to save more weight by getting a 14.1" screen rather than a 15.1" - it's a bit lighter, but not much. Also, the touchpad is very inconsistent. Sometimes, you have to be carefully with the speed of "taps" or you'll end up "double-tapping" everything and selecting things unintentionally. Other times, the touchpad has difficulty recognizing strokes.

QuickTake:

Pros: Good battery life, great Direct Media capability, fast processing, bluetooth convenience.
Cons: Questionable touchpad, a bit heavier than expected.

Product Rating: 3 star(s) Good first laptop

Comments:
Lack of a basic OS such as MS Office meant that I couldn't use the laptop for what I had Intended straight out of the box the way I could my Dell desktop. I don't know why the bigger pricetag for less functions. I do like the portability and ease of use. Excellent picture quality and lots of USB ports. I think it will easily meet my needs for home, school and business.

QuickTake:

Pros: It is easy enough to add applications. The set up is pretty easy.
Cons: Lack of some basic OS means that additional, expensive purchases must be made for the computer.

I use it a lot, sneak to use it, hardly turn it off. It's my constant buddy. Buy a nice bright color, the brown is so dark, it's almost black....

QuickTake:

Pros: The screen and keyboard felt bigger than I expected given the size I picked, I was pumped!
Cons: Vista is NEW

Dell's new Inspirons are more about colour and value than performance and excitement.

Review Verdict: All sport 2-megapixel webcams and dual-digital array microphone for web conferencing. Styling is similar with a black base supporting a silver keyboard and trim. The underlying magnesium alloy chassis keeps everything feeling solid. There's minimal flexin

Comments:
It might not be terribly cheap, but Dell's Inspiron 1420 offers plenty of portable power and options without sacrificing fun.

Review Verdict: Performance was excellent. Our test unit's nine-cell battery lasted nearly 5 hours. Equipped with a 2.2-GHz Core Duo T7500 processor and 2GB of RAM, the 1420 rose to the top of its class with a WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 83. That score put it in a tie f
