no matter what anyone says, iPods are still the gold standard in mp3 players. the mini is the ideal device for people who want to run, bike, or work out (the arm band accessory makes it simple to work out without even realizing your iPod is there!). while the storage is less than a regular ipod, its a small price to pay for the ultimate in size and weight.

but beware of "get it free" scams. of all of these, there is only one legitimate company that actually delivers your item without inundating you with spam. if you do want to get one of these for free, without the worry of being scammed, go here:

Product Rating: 5.00 star(s) Ipod mini correction to above review.

Comments:
Letter to Zag,

I wanted to correct some of the info in your review.

1. You can't however install the same iPod on two different computers.
This has noting to do with the mini. This relates to the settings you use in iTunes and is easily changed. I use
the ipod on 2 different computers without a problem. You can set it to manual manage instead of auto
update in the ipod options to solve this. The ipod isn't confused, it's doing exactly what the user settings
are telling it to.

2. The AAC audio file format is the only one supported by iPod mini.
The mini will play MP3, AAC and Apple Lossless formats. I think the only major one it won't play is WMA and
I hear there may be a software update coming soon to add WMA support.

3. When you download songs on iTune, they are delivered using the AAC format.
You can change your settings to have iTunes rip songs as AAC, MP3, or Apple Lossless formats

4. AAC is Apple copywrite protected, so you cannot convert to another format.
AAC is not apple copyright protected. AAC is as open a format as MP3 and used/ supported by many
companies. Apple uses AAC but it's not aYou can convert AAC to another format, but you will be
recompressing an already compressed song. It's like ripping a song as mp3 and then reripping the mp3
again. I think you are confused by the AAC files Apple sells from the iTunes Music Store. The files are AAC
with DRM (digital rights management), the DRM is what is preventing you from converting to a different
format. Thank the RIAA for that. It's there to prevent music piracy.

5. When you import music from a CD using iTunes, it is converted to AAC format by default. So think twice
if you need your downloads as a MP3 format.
You can change the ripping setting in iTunes preferences if you need MP3. Many test show AAC to be
superior to MP3 plus both are from Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and owned by International
Standardisation Organisation (ISO). Think of AAC as a new alternative or upgrade to mp3. AAC files are also
called .mp4.

6. Warning most of the tweaking is only available on MAC computer.
As far a tweaks and hacks, I think the Windows users are quickly over taking us. We had the advantage of
getting the iPod early, but there's a lot more of them :)

QuickTake:

Pros: Small size. Cool factor.
Cons: Initial cost high. This should change as demand cools.

Comments:
itunes software that comes with the mini iPod is not very intuitive. Worse, if you get some better software, it attempts to override it at all opportunities - I had to remove it completely in the end-after wating days fixing up various music libraries across the home network. The player itself is brilliant, but shop around for some user-friendly software

QuickTake:

Pros: compact, stylish and over 1000 songs
Cons: iTunes is very user-unfriendly

Product Rating: 5.00 star(s) The coolest MP3 player on the market

Comments:
The iPod mini is an amazing little device; once you see one for yourself and get to play around with it you
will want one. The mini is ultra compact compared to the other current models of the iPod and it comes in a
color other than white, which is a nice change. It holds a nice 8-hour charge with makes it nice for a full day
of driving or any other activity. There are numerous add-ons that you can get for the mini so you can use it
for more than just an MP3 player. How many people sit down and listen to more than 1,000 songs in a day,
probably not that many.

There is one problem with the first generation iPod Minis that you should be aware of. If you purchased you
iPod Mini before June 2004 you are eventually going to get very poor sound quality due to a faulty internal
connection. This usually happens after about 20 to 40 days of use. This is a reason why it has been so hard
to get a Mini before now. If you do have the problem, you can return it to Apple to be repaired at no charge.

If you are someone who has seen the mini and you really like it, you should definitely buy one. The second
batch that is going to come out in June will have the noise problem fixed.

Also, one other myth that I should put to rest is the fact that iPods can only play AAC files. That is incorrect.
I have an iPod and I am able to play any file that is in the MP3 format, so dont listen to other people when
they tell you that it can only play AAC. iTunes can handle AAC as well as MP3 files, and you dont have to
convert your files when you import them into iTunes.

iTunes and the iPod are the ultimate combination. There is nothing better.

QuickTake:

Pros: Small, Ultra Portable, Not Plain White Anymore
Cons: Pre-June 2004 Minis have noise problems

Comments:
After much deliberation about the Apple Mini iPod, I went ahead and purchased it. My initial reservation was that it was too costly. There were already troubles with the battery life. However Apple could not keep enough of these toys on their shelf. The Mini iPod looks good, feels good. It has all of the features you would want in a MP3 player. It even has room for other hard drive data like, calendar, contacts, notes. Most importantly it cleverly organizes your music by categories. The iTunes software now works on both MAC and PC. You can't however install the same iPod on two different computers. Its confuses the iPod when you try and transfer to another computer. You can lose data if you don't watch your yes and no prompts. After 50 million songs downloaded on the Apple iTunes web site, you think Apple would lower their price. No... It sells for 249 almost everywhere. The new Mini iPod comes with only 4 Gigs. Thats enough for me. The older bigger iPod kin comes with 15-40 Gigs. However, it does not come with the accessories. Like the earplugs, belt clips. You know you don't even need the docking station. The Apple care plan is 60.00. I called to register it after not being able to register it online. After all of that the service plan does not cover battery replacement, pass this on. The service plan or Apple Care basically is for phone support, which costs 29 a hour after the 1 year warranty expires. The AAC audio file format is the only one supported by iPod mini. When you download songs on iTune, they are delivered using the AAC format. AAC is Apple copywrite protected, so you cannot convert to another format. When you import music from a CD using iTunes, it is converted to AAC format by default. So think twice if you need your downloads as a MP3 format. Try a Google search for iPod, and check out what other tweaking can be done by third party software to your iPod. Warning most of the tweaking is only available on MAC computer. The wheel style works very well. The play,stop,pause,on/off features are easy to use and setting the standard for future style of all players. Apple usually makes a reliable product. Being a MAC guy first and XP later. I feel comfortable with their latest money maker. You can email me with questions or comments to: bigeyedesigns@hotmail.com I hope this helps.
